"I lay on the first stroke of color. After that, the canvas has to do at least half the work."
- from Bluebeard
by Kurt Vonnegut

People usually speak of Zen moments when trying to explain the process to something that is difficult to articulate, but I was learning about Taoism when I executed my first mature paintings. It was after viewing the late Frank Hewitt's work that I became inspired by his process and began my first attempts of layering paint. Taping. Layering. Never knowing exactly what I would get until I pulled the tape up and could see how the new color that I added interacted with what had been hidden beneath the tape.
